Square-faced, cool, blonde American actress, born Virginia Rowlands, and often seen in serious, intense roles. Also on stage and TV, she was most effective for the cinema in films directed by her husband John Cassavetes. She increasingly appeared in bravura roles in his movies, and was twice nominated for an Academy Award. An Emmy winner for the TV movie The Betty Ford Story in 1987, she stayed around in harsh-voiced character roles long after her husband's death in 1989, and was given an honorary Oscar in 2015: The High Cost of Loving (1958), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), The Spiral Road (1962), Tony Rome (1967), Faces (1968), The Happy Ending (1969), Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Two-Minute Warning (1976), Opening Night (1972), The Brink's Job (1978), Gloria (1980), The Tempest (1982), Love Streams (1983), I'm Almost Not Crazy (1984), The Third Day Comes (1986), Light of Day (1987), Another Woman (1988), Once Around (1990), Ted and Venus (1991), The Neon Bible (1995), Unhook the Stars (1996), She's So Lovely (1997), Hope Floats (1998), The Weekend (1999), The Color of Love (2000), The Notebook (2004), The Skeleton Key (2005), Paris, I Love You (2006), Broken English (2007), Olive (2011), Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks (2014) and the short Unfortunate Circumstances (2017), her last.
