Dark-haired, smily-faced British comedy actor with Mr Punch-like features, a close friend of Peter Sellers (to whose films he added several comic cameos) and the last surviving associate of The Goon Show, to which he contributed both as scriptwriter and minor performer. A boy actor, in pantomime at 13, his film career had barely got started (with 1939's The Spy in Black) when he went into the RAF in World War Two, entertaining the troops and meeting fellow comedians Sellers and Tony Hancock. He re-entered films in post-war years, his prolific output including Emergency Call (1952), Forces' Sweetheart (1953), One Good Turn (1955), They Never Learn (1956), Sink the Bismarck! (1959), The Millionairess (1960), The Wrong Arm of the Law (1962), The Pink Panther (1963), A Shot in the Dark (1964), Alfie (1966), Casino Royale (1967), The Magic Christian (1969), Doctor in Trouble (1970), Return of the Pink Panther (1974), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), The Prisoner of Zenda (1979), The Sea Wolves (1980), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), Blind Date (1987), Son of the Pink Panther (1993) and The Incredible Adventures of Marco Polo (1993, released 1998), his last. Also an exhibited photographer and occasional director, he died following a stroke.
