Kathleen Byron

Born - 11 January 1921, WestHam, London, England
Died - 18 January 2009

Fair-haired British actress of slightly cool and distinctly dominant personality, which often resulted in her playing schemers, although she's best remembered as the mad nun in the 1946 version of Black Narcussus - her most memorable performance. As with others who did not quite make the front rank of stardom, she was drawn into lead roles in several British second-features of the 1950s. Two visits to Hollywood were unsuccessful and she returned to the UK. Born Kathleen Fell, her other film roles include Climbing High (1938), The Young Mr Pitt (1942), The Silver Fleet (1943), A Matter of Life and Death (1946), The Small Back Room (1948), Madness of the Heart (1949), Prelude to Fame (1950), Scarlet Thread (1951), Hell is Sold Out (1951), The Gambler and the Lady (1952), Young Bess (1953), Profile (1954), Secret Venture (1955), Hand in Hand (1960), Night of the Eagle (1962), Hammerhead (1968), Twins of Evil (1971), Nothing But the Night (1972), Craze (1973), The Abdication (1974), One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing (1975), The Elephant Man (1980), Emma (1996) and Saving Private Ryan (1998), her last. She died from breast cancer.
