Tubby, jowly, balding, sometimes bearded, dark-haired character comedian. a star on TV and in nightclubs but 'second banana' in films - often those of Mel Brooks - although funny wherever he appeared. Doing TV and stand-up comedy from the mid 1950s, his films included Diary of a Bachelor (1964), The Glass Bottom Boat (1966), The Busy Body (1967), What's So Bad About Feeling Good? (1968), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Every Little Crook and Nanny (1972), Blazing Saddles (1974), Silent Movie (1976), The World's Greatest Lover (1977, The Cheap Detective (1978), The Muppet Movie (1979), History of the World: Part I (1981), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Johnny Dangerously (1984), Haunted Honeymoon (1986), Going Bananas (1987), the voice of Pizza the Hut in Spaceballs (1989), Loose Cannons (1990). Driving Me Crazy (1991), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), The Good Bad Guy (1997), Baby Geniuses (1999) and Breaking the Fifth (2004), his last. Long married to fellow funster Carol Arthur, he died from kidney failure.
