Bulky, jowly, open-mouthed American supporting player with large face and thinning gingery hair, a kind of more serious Stateside version of Britain's Roy Kinnear. Drawn to acting from his early thirties, he found himself consistently cast in 'beastly' character roles, such as bullying sheriffs and interfering officials. But he was boosted to better parts after his striking portrayal of an amoral private eye in Blood Simple in 1984, later alternating between big-city cops and wheezy rurals. Dozens of film appearances (not to mention a busy TV schedule) included those in Midnight Cowboy (1969), Stiletto (1969), Little Big Man (1970), What's Up, Doc? (1972), Serpico (1973), The Gambler (1974), At Long Last Love (1975), Bound for Glory (1976), Slap Shot (1977), The Jerk (1979), Brubaker (1980), Reds (1981), Blade Runner (1982), Silkwood (1983), Fletch (1985), Raising Arizona (1987), Sunset (1988), Catch Me If You Can (1989), Narrow Margin (1990), White Sands (1992), Free Willy (1993), Panther (1995), Romeo & Juliet (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Twilight (1998), Wild Wild West (1999), Snow Dogs (2002), Christmas with the Kranks (2004), Man in the Chair (2007), The Assignment (2010), The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012), Cavalry (2014), Change in the Air (2018), Knives Out (2019), The Mimic (2020), Dotty & Soul (2021) and Outlaw Posse (2024), his last. He died from cardiac arrest. The 'M' stood for Michael.
