Maureen O'Hara

Actress

Born - 17 August 1920, Ranelagh, Dublin, Ireland
Died - 24 October 2015

Tall, curvaceous Irish actress, born Maureen FitzSimons, who went to Hollywood at 19 and became the film capital's favourite red-haired, hazel-eyed Irish colleen. Equally at home with adventuresses and quieter roles, she brought high spirits and a twinkling eye to every role, performing, like Barbara Stanwyck, many of her own stunts in the Technicolor action films that she mixed with classic black-and-white dramas. Never nominated for an Academy Award, she received a belated honorary Oscar last year (2014). After a low-key debut in Kicking the Moon Around (1938), she hit stardom in Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn a year later, and was quickly snapped by Hollywood, appearing in two or three films a year from then on, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Black Swan (1942). Buffalo Bill (1944), The Spanish Main (1945), Miracle on 34th Street (1947), Sitting Pretty (1948), Rio Grande (1950, the first of several films with favourite leading man John Wayne), The Quiet Man (1952), The Long Gray Line (1954), Lady Godiva (1955), The Wings of Eagles (1957), Our Man in Havana (1959), The Parent Trap (1961), McLintock! (1963), The Rare Breed (1965), Big Jake (1971) and, much later, Only the Lonely (1991). She ended her career with three TV movies - The Christmas Box (1995), Cab to Canada (1998) and The Last Dance (2000). Three times married, she died in her sleep.
