Rugged, fair-haired, open-faced Australian actor who came to Britain in 1951 and eventually found his iconic, defining role when he played Henry VIII in the TV series The Six Wives of Henry VIII. He began his film career in the mid 1950s and for seven years enjoyed popularity as a dashing hero, mainly in costume drama: True As a Turtle (1956), Dangerous Exile (1957), The Gypsy and the Gentleman (1958), The Hellfire Club (1960), All Night Long (1961) and Seven Seas to Calais(1962). Also pursuing interests as an illustrator and theatre director, his later films included Prudence and the Pill (1968), The Executioner (1970), Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972), Moments (1974), The Day Christ Died (1980), The Deceivers (1988)and the weepie Love/Loss in 2010, his last. He married the actress Jeannette Sterke in 1957, and she survives him, along with their children Paul and Helena, who both became actors.
