John Fraser

Actor

Born - 18 March 1931, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Died - 7 November 2020

Fresh-faced, young-looking, light-haired, slim Scottish actor, a pin-up of the 1950s who did not mellow into more mature roles, although he tackled a wider variety of characters than one might think. Divided his time between plays and films until 1965, but thereafter was almost entirely confined to the theatre, with occasional forays into TV. He opened his cinema account in 1953 with The Good Beginning, The Desert Rats and Valley of Song, later credits including The Dam Busters (1954), Touch and Go (1955), The Good Companions (1957), The Wind Cannot Read (1958), The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960), Fury at Smuggler's Bay (1961), El Cid (1961), Waltz of the Toreadors (1962), Tamahine (1963), Repulsion (1964), A Study in Terror (1965), Doctor in Clover (1966), Isadora (1969), and Schizo (1976), his last. He retired in 1996 after appearing in the acclaimed TV film Truth or Dare. He also wrote two volumes of autobiography, three novels and a play. He died from oesophagal cancer.
