Dora Bryan

Actress

Born - 7 February 1923, Southport, Lancashire, UK
Died - 23 July 2014

Chirpy, fluffily blonde British character actress and occasional star whose high nasal tones could just as effectively suggest the backstreets of Soho as her native Lancashire. Born Dora Broadbent and an ENSA entertainer during World War two, she stemmed a long run of barmaids, servants and comic cameos with a British Academy Award for her drunken mother in A Taste of Honey (1961). Numerous other credits included Odd Man Out (1946), No Room at the Inn (1948), The Fallen Idol (1948), The Blue Lamp (1949), High Treason (1951), Women of Twilight (1952), Mad About Men (1954), As Long As They're Happy (1955), The Green Man (1956), Carry On Sergeant (1958), Desert Mice (1959), Follow That Horse! (1960), The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery (1966), Two a Penny (1968), Hands of the Ripper (1971), Up the Front (1972), Screamtime (1983), Apartment Zero (1988), An Angel for May (2002), MirrorMask (2004) and the short Gone to the Dogs (2006), her last. Her 54-year marriage to cricketer Bill Lawton ended with his death in 2008.
