Paul Mazursky

Director/actor

Born - 25 April 1930, Brokklyn, New York, USA
Died - 30 June 2014

Stubby, dark-haired, bespectacled American director whose films were often boldly up-to-date, dealing with fashionable or controversial subjects. Born Irwin Mazursky, he flirted with box-office success, though his films were often misfires with the public, and he remains more of an actors' director - unsurprisingly, as he racked up more than 50 credits as an actor himself. He began directing feature films in his late thirties, some of the better-known being Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Harry and Tonto (1974), An Unmarried Woman (1978), Moscow on the Hudson (1984), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Enemies, a Love Story (1989), Scenes from a Mall (1991), Faithful (1996) and the documentary Yippee (2006), his last. His output as an actor included Fear and Desire (1953), Blackboard Jungle (1955), Deathwatch (1966), A Star is Born (1976), Into the Night (1885), Punchline (1988), Carlito's Way (1993), Bulworth (1998) and Cattle Call (2006), his last. Five times Oscar-nominated, he died from cardiac arrest.
