Square-faced, honest-looking American actor with a shock of dark hair. A Japanese prisoner for the latter half of World War Two after being shot down in his fighter plane, he took up acting following repatriation and was in semi-leading Hollywood roles throughout the 1950s: Knock on Any Door (1949), Battleground (1949), Kansas Raiders (1950), The Thing from Another World (1951), The Big Sky (1952), Tennessee Champ (1953), Men of the Fighting Lady (1954), Prisoner of War (1954), The Desperate Hours (1955), The Proud and Profane (1956), Ten Thousand Bedrooms (1957), Stagecoach to Yuma (1960), The Longest Day (1962), Savage Sam (1963), Flight to Fury (1964), Lassie: Rim of Disaster (1967) and Seven Alone (1974), his last. Born Dallas Dewey Martin: singer Peggy Lee was the second of his three wives.
