Tall, long-headed Italian actor with tousled dark hair, a giant of the spaghetti western scene in the 1960s, when he played villains (under his real name) and heroes (often as Montgomery Wood) of the Far (Italian) West. As a child he sustained facial injuries from an unexploded World War Two bomb, leaving him with noticeable scars. Nonetheless, he embarked on an acting career, at first as a stuntman, but soon in featured roles: Venice, the Moon and You (1958), Ben-Hur (1959), Messalina (1960), Battle of the Worlds (1961), Boccaccio '70 (1962), Il Gattopardo/The Leopard (1963), Angelique (1964), A Pistol for Ringo (1964), Adios Gringo (1965), The Return of Ringo (1965), Arizona Colt (1966), Fort Yuma Gold (1966), Wanted (1967), The Bastard (1968), When Women Had Tails (1970), Archer of Fire (1971, as Robin Hood), Amigo, Stay Away (1972), Charleston (1974), California (1977), Corleone (1978), Tenebrae (1982), Tex and the Lord of the Deep (1985), Chateauroux District (1987), Jewels (1992), Un Bel di Vedremo (1997), Mad Love (2001), The Final Inquiry (2006) and To Rome with Love (2012), his last. He was killed in a car crash. The actress Vera Gemma is his daughter.
