William Windom

Actor

Born - 28 September 1923, New York City, USA
Died - 16 August 2012

Owlishly handsome, prematurely grey-haired, all-purpose American actor, often seen as 'Everyman' characters, but most associated with the works of humourist James Thurber, from his one-man performances on stage, to his Emmy-winning leading role in the 1969-70 TV series My World and Welcome to It. Windom was acting on TV as early as the late 1940s - film roles coming much later. He made his debut in a fairly uncharacteristic part, as the prosecutor in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Later films, almost always in important supporting roles, included For Love or Money (1963), The Americanization of Emily (1964), Hour of the Gun (1967), The Detective (1968), The Gypsy Moths (1969), Brewster McCloud (1970), The Mephisto Waltz (1971), Dynamite Man from Glory Jail (1971), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972), Echoes of a Summer (1976), Mean Dog Blues (1978), Separate Ways (1981), Grandview USA (1984), Prince Jack (1985), Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), She's Having a Baby (1988), Committed (1991), Sommersby (1993), Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Children of the Corn: the Gathering (1996), True Crime (1999), Early Bird Special (2001), Dismembered (2003) and Yesterday's Dreams (2005), his last. Five times married: his fifth lasted 37 years until his death from congestive heart failure.
