Betta St John

Born - 26 November 1929, Hawthorne, California, USA
Died - 23 June 2023

Petite, raven-haired American actress, singer and dancer of dewy-eyed appeal and exotic prettiness. In films as a child, playing in 'kiddie' revues with Shirley Temple, she moved to Broadway musicals in her teenage years, and her performance as Liat opposite her soon-to-be husband, English actor Peter Grant, in South Pacific, brought Hollywood calling again. With Grant, she moved to England in 1955, making the remainder of her films there. Born Betty Jean Striegler, she retired in 1965 to raise her son and two daughters, all of whom survive her. Grant died from cancer in 1992. St John's too-few films included Dora's Dunking Doughnuts (1933), Destry Rides Again (1939), Waldo's Last Stand (1940), Lydia (1941), Jane Eyre (1943), Dream Wife (1952), The Robe (1953), All the Brothers Were Valiant (1953), Dangerous Mission (1954), The Saracen Blade (1954), The Law vs Billy the Kid (1954), The Naked Dawn (1955), Alias John Preston (1955), High Tide at Noon (1957), Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957), The Snorkel (1958), Corridors of Blood (1958), Tarzan the Magnificent (1960) and City of the Dead (1961), her last.
