Dennis Hopper

Actor

Born - 17 May 1935, Dodge City, Kansas, USA
Died - 29 May 2010

Hawk-featured, light-haired maverick actor and director whose early career veered from whining, wild-eyed psychopaths and bad boys to hippie heroes, when he became an iconic figure with the success of Easy Rider. In his later years he often returned to playing villains. After a blink-and-you-miss-him debut in Johnny Guitar (1954), he was more prominent in Rebel without a Cause (1955), I Died a Thousand Times (1955), Giant (1956), Gunfight at the OK Corral (1956), From Hell to Texas (1958), Night Tide (1961) and The Sons of Katie Elder (1965). Western bad guys continued in Hang 'Em High (1968) and True Grit (1969), but meanwhile the bike-riding wild men had begun in The Trip and The Glory Stompers (both 1967). After Easy Rider, there were a few more forays into direction, and he began to attract a more varied range of acting roles, if still mostly as outsiders: Kid Blue (1973), The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Osterman Weekend (1983), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986, and his only Oscar nomination), Chattahoochee (1989), Red Rock West (1992) and Speed (1994). After he walked off the set of The Truman Show (1997), his roles declined into near-obscurity and most went straight to video or DVD. Five times married, he died from pancreatic cancer.
