Versatile, insolent-looking, fluffily dark-haired, stage-trained second lead and character actor in jack-the-lad style roles in British films and TV from a young age. Best known as one half of the leads in the popular TV sleuthing series Randall and Hopkirk (deceased), his films included Johnny You're Wanted (1953), The Gilded Cage (1954), Impulse (1955), X the Unknown (1956), Yangtse Incident (1957), These Dangerous Years (1957), Dunkirk (1958), No Time to Die/Tank Force (1958), The Lady is a Square (1959), Naked Fury (1959), The Criminal (1960), The Unstoppable Man (1961), Jungle Street (1961), The Damned (1962), Tomorrow at Ten (1963), Carry On Jack (1964), Genghis Khan (1965), Night of the Big Heat (1967), Hammerhead (1968), The Desperados (1969), A Touch of the Other (1970), Carry On at Your Convenience (1971), Carry On Matron (1972), Juggernaut (1974), George and Mildred (1980) and Captives (1994), his last, although he later appeared in scores of episodes of TV's Coronation Street until 2009. Also a satirical writer, he was married for more than 60 years to actress Renny Lister who, along with their three children, survives him.
