Pretty, peppy, dark-haired American actress, a popular radio singer who dubbed several actresses for films before co-starring with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in three of their early comedies. Later she became a staunch campaigner for women's rights, and founded her own perfume company, while continuing with her acting career. Born Nellie Paulina Bergin, she was singing professionally at 14 before making an on-screen debut in Across the Rio Grande (1949). Later movies, rather scattered down the years, included At War with the Army (1950), That's My Boy (1951), The Stooge (1952), Arena (1953), Escape from Fort Bravo (1954), Cape Fear (1962), Move Over, Darling (1963), Kisses for My President (1964, as the first female US president), A Guide for the Married Man (1967), then, after countless TV movies, Making Mr Right (1987), Cry-Baby (1990), Dr Jekyll and Ms Hyde (1995), Paradise, Texas (2005) and Struck by Lightning (2012), her last. She won an Emmy for her performance in TV's The Helen Morgan Story (1957). In later times, she also acted on such hit TV series as The Sopranos and Desperate Housewives. The first of her three marriages (all ending in divorce) was to actor Jerome Courtland.
