Distinguished British cinematographer, an expert in light and shade who began his career as a camera assistant at 15, and worked in the profession for more than 60 years. After working as assistant and second-unit director throughout the 1930s, Taylor began to strike out on his own in post-war years. His first solo credit was on The Guinea Pig (1948), and a long succession of major movies followed: Seven Days to Noon (1950), High Treason (1951), The Yellow Balloon (1953), Yield to the Night (1956), Woman in a Dressing Gown (1957), Ice Cold in Alex (1958), The Rebel (1961), Dr Strangelove or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb (1964), Repulsion (1965), Work is a 4-Letter Word (1968), Frenzy (1972), The Omen (1976), Star Wars (1977), Dracula (1979), Flash Gordon(1980), Lassiter (1984), The Bedroom Window (1987) and Don't Get Me Started (1994), his last.
