Max Bygraves

Actor/comedian/singer

Born - 16 October 1922, Rotherhithe, London, England
Died - 31 August 2012

Ever-cheerful radio and music-hall comedian with dark, wavy hair and mellow singing voice who enjoyed popularity in most areas of show business and, while in his thirties, starred in a few films as well, projecting sincerity with some success. Born Walter Bygraves - he took the 'Max' from his favourite comedian, Max Miller, he was in a few rough-and-ready films of the late 1940s - Bless 'Em All, Skimpy in the Navy and Nitwits on Parade. There was a character role in the 1951 version of Tom Brown's Schooldays, but by the middle of the decade, he had emerged as one of the country's most popular radio and TV entertainers, and there were four more films, all in starring roles: Charley Moon (1956), A Cry from the Streets (1958), Bobbikins (1959) and Spare the Rod (1961). The genial entertainer appeared as himself in The Alf Garnett Saga (1972) and played one of his favourite comedians, Bud Flanagan, in the TV movie Call Up the Stars (1995). He spent his last years in Australia, where he died from Alzheimer's Disease, a year after the death of his wife of 69 years.
