Chris Marker

Director

Born - 29 July 1921, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France
Died - 29 July 2012

Avant-garde, notably reclusive French director, with a vague physical resemblance to Buster Keaton. Born Christian Bouche-Villeneuve, his films, often part documentary, part political observation on history, are noted for their haunting images, and made his 'difficult' movies popular in highbrow and arthouse circles. Beginning as a novelist, Marker was soon into cinema, including Letter to Siberia (1957), Cuba Si! (1961), La Jetee (1962), Le Joli Mai (1963), The Koumiko Mystery (1965), Far from Vietnam (1967), Le Train en Marche (1972), Le Fond de l'Air est Rouge (1977), Junkopia (1981), Sans Soleil (1983), AK (1985), Memoires de Simone (1986), The Last Bolshevik (1993), Casque Bleu (1995), Level Five (1997) and the short Leila Attacks (2007), his last. He died from natural causes on his 91st birthday.
