Glamorous, long-faced, liquid-lipped blonde actress notable mainly for her association with legendary bad-film maker Edward D Wood Jr. Born Dolores Eble, she was taken to Hollywood as a child. where her movie work included a walk-on in the Oscar-winning It Happened One Night (1934). She returned to acting in the early 1950s, when TV work was followed by the films Outlaw Women (1952), Glen or Glenda? (1952, her first with Wood), The Blue Gardenia (1953), Count the Hours (1953), The Moonlighter (1953), Jail Bait (1954, another for Wood), The Raid (1954), This is My Love (1954), Bride of the Monster (1955, her last for Wood) and The Opposite Sex (1956). From the late 1950s, she concentrated on a much more successful career as a songwriter, contributing numerous songs to Elvis Presley movies between 1960 and 1969, a time when she also founded her own record company. In her seventies, she came back into the limelight when protesting at a portrayal of her smoking (she never did) in the biopic Ed Wood (1994). Later, she had roles in three drive-in, or direct-to-video horror films, The Ironbound Vampire (1997), Dimension in Fear (1998) and Corpse Grinders 2 (2000).
