Sharp-featured (in a smily way), brown-haired, long-lived British actor who got through a tremendous amount of TV and theatre work, and quite a few films besides. The son of bakers, his plane was shot down during World War Two and he spent three years as a P-o-W before returning to the UK and embarking on an acting career. After forming the Guernsey Theatre Company, he moved to England and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, becoming one of its leading lights. Films include The Criminal (1960), The Heroes of Telemark (1964), A Twist of Sand (1968), Lock Up Your Daughters! (1969), The Buttercup Chain (1970), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Tales from the Crypt (1972), Alien Attack (1976), a voice in Saturn 3 (1980), Amadeus (1984), Eliminators (1986), Suburban Commando (1991), Swimming With Sharks (1994), The Scarlet Letter (1995), The Colour of Funny (1999), Alien Hunter (2003), These Foolish Things (2005) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2009), his last, although he later played Hallyne in 2 episodes of TV's Game of Thrones. Father of actresses Michele and Karen Dotrice. His wife Kay died in 2007 after 60 years of marriage.
