Arthur Hiller

Director

Born - 22 November 1923, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Died - 17 August 2016

Craggy, shaggy-haired, rather gaunt Canadian-born Hollywood director, often helming comedy vehicles and directing on TV from the late 1940s. His TV drama Massacre at Sand Creek (1956) was shown in cinemas in some countries, and he followed it with The Careless Years (1957). But it would be the 1960s before he began to achieve real prominence in the cinema: Flight of the White Stallions (1962), The Americanization of Emily (1964), Tobruk (1966), The Out-of-Towners (1969), Love Story (1970, an Oscar nomination), The Hospital (1971), Man of La Mancha (1972), Silver Streak (1976), The In-Laws (1979), Making Love (1981), The Lonely Guy (1983), Outrageous Fortune (1987), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), Filofax (1990), The Babe (1992), Carpool (1996), An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (1997) and National Lampoon's Pucked (2006), the latter providing a rather dismal end to a distinguished career. He was given a special Academy Award in 2002. His wife Gwen died in June this year after 68 years of marriage.
