Tall, dark-haired Austrian actor of long-headed handsomeness, the brother of actress Maria Schell, and equally adaptable to kindly, resolute or fanatical roles. He began in German films, but international stardom beckoned with his appearances in The Young Lions (1958) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), the latter of which won him an Oscar. He also directed a few films, including First Love (1970). Other films as actor included Kinder, Mutter und ein General (1955), Topkapi (1964), The Deadly Affair (1966), Krakatoa - East of Java (1968), Pope Joan (1972), The Odessa File (1974), Julia (1977), The Black Hole (1979), The Assisi Underground (1984), The Freshman (1990), Little Odessa (1994), Deep Impact (1998), Festival in Cannes (2001), The Brothers Bloom (2008), Darkness (2010) and Les Brigands (2014), his last. He died from pneumonia.
