Robert Rietty

Actor/Voiceover artist

Born - 8 February 1923, Paddington, London, UK
Died - 3 April 2015

Tall character actor of Italian parentage, with a shock of dark hair and fine-drawn features, sometimes moustachioed, in dozens of supporting roles, as well as providing the voices for many continental actors whose English was dodgy in post-war British films. He also often 'dubbed' for Jack Hawkins when that fine actor lost the power to speak. Born Lucio Rietti, a cousin of Hollywood star Paul Muni, he began as a child player (usually billed as Bobby Rietti) in such films as Heads We Go (1933), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), Emil and the Detectives (1935), Children of the Fog (1935) and The Challenge (1938). Briefly interned at the start of World War II, he later joined concert parties, and resumed his career in earnest in post-war times: A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Call of the Blood (1948), Give Us This Day (1949), Prelude to Fame (1950), Time Bomb (1952), The Captain's Paradise (1953), The Black Rider (1954), Born for Trouble (1955), Checkpoint (1956), Just My Luck (1957), A Tale of Two Cities (1958), Conspiracy of Hearts (1960), The Guns of Navarone (1961), On the Beat (1962), I Could Go On Singing (1963), The Crooked Road (1964), The Bible: In the Beginning... (1966), Hell is Empty (1967), Star! (1968), The Italian Job (1969), and many, many more: his last film credits came in Hilary & Jackie (1998) and Hannibal (2001).
