Vivacious, wide-eyed Indian actress, originally a dancer and choreographer, who started a film career in India, but later came to England and became a familiar figure in British movies, often as feisty and/or testy elderly relatives. Sometimes billed as Zohra Sehgal, she was born Sahibzadi Zohra Khan, and made her earliest films in India: Dharti ke Lai (1946), Afsar (1950) and Heer (1956). Coming to Britain, she became a character actress much in demand: The Long Duel (1967), The Guru (1969), Tales That Witness Madness (1973), The Honorary Consul (1983), Caravaggio (1986), Masala (1992), Bhaji on the Beach (1993), Straight from the Heart (1999), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), The Mistress of Spices (2005) and Saawariya (2007), her last. It was back in India that she died from a heart attack at 102.
