Vivaciously pretty, raven-haired, apple-cheeked German actress who survived working during the Nazi years, appearing in a wholesome series of frolics, such as Girl of the Black Forest (1950), which made her a bankable star. She came to Britain to play a Hungarian maid in the comedy Made in Heaven in 1952, but it was the same froth she later fought to escape, and she appeared in no more international roles until the early 1960s. Originally a singer and dancer, she made her debut as such in Ein Windstoss (1942). Many later credits included Freunde (1945), Herzkonig (1947), My Wife's Best Friend (1949), The Thief of Baghdad (1952), My Sister and I (1954), Kaiserball (1956), Tabarin (1958), Rebel Flight to Cuba (1959), A Matter of WHO (1961), The Secret Ways (1961), Journey into Nowhere (1962), Breakfast with Death (1964), The Bridge at Remagen (1968) and DeSade (1969), her last, after which she concentrated on a career in the theatre. Her second husband committed suicide, her third partner was killed in a air crash. For tha last 29 years of his life, she was married to the writer Charles Regnier until he, too, died, in 2001.
