Brown-haired, usually bearded and moustachioed, this lithely lanky dancer was an iconic teacher of free-style jazz dancing through four decades. As a younger man, he was also in demand for film dancing stints, most notable as Caleb, one of the seven brothers out to get seven brides, in the nearest he came to an acting role. Born Harold Mattox, he was busy in Hollywood from age of 23, and could be spotted as a featured dancer in Ziegfeld Follies (1944, released 1946), Yolanda and the Thief (1945), Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), Two Sisters from Boston (1946), Easy to Wed (1946), Good News (1947), The Merry Widow (1952), The 'I Don't Care' Girl (1953), The Band Wagon (1953), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), Guys and Dolls (1955), The Girl Rush (1956) and Pepe (1960). His last appearance on screen came in Song of Norway (1970). He married for the first and only time at 59.
