Stocky, light-haired English actor with thin smile. On stage from 1942, the theatre remained his first love, despite appearing in a number of films, few of which, however, used his talent for sardonic humour. After a debut in The Cruel Sea (1952), he was seen in The Divided Heart (1954), The Deep Blue Sea (1955), Town on Trial! (1956), The Good Companions (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), The Doctor's Dilemma (1959), The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), The Witches/The Devil's Own (1966), Master of the Islands (1970), the police inspector in Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972), Travels With My Aunt (1972), Stevie (1978), Hanover Street (1979), 'Q' in Never Say Never Again (1983), Personal Services (1986), Cry Freedom (1987), Henry V (1989) and The Age of Innocence (1993). After a decade in the theatre, he made his last film, Gangs of New York (2002). His partner, actor Geoffrey Burridge, died in 1987.
