Warmly attractive, full-faced, auburn-haired, very English actress equally at home in glamorous or homespun roles. She won leading parts almost as soon as she came to films from the repertory company she had founded herself. But her movies were mostly second-features and her career (which perhaps might have blossomed more fully in Hollywood) took second place to her marriage to Canadian actor Patrick Allen: The Browning Version (1951), The Night Won't Talk (1952), Street Corner/Both Sides of the Law (1953), Three Steps in the Dark (1953), The Blue Peter (1955), It's Never Too Late (1956), Three Crooked Men (1958), The Solitary Child (1958), Night Without Pity (1961), On the Run (1963), Night of the Big Heat (1967), The Devil Rides Out (1967), Battle of Britain (1969) and The Stud (1978), her last, although she was occasionally seen in TV series into the 1990s. She died from cancer, her husband having passed away in 2006.
