David R Ellis

Director/stunt director/stuntman/actor

Born - 8 September 1952, Santa Monica, California, USA
Died - 7 January 2013

Perma-tanned action man of films who began as an actor, then progressed through stunting, stunt directing and second-unit work to become a fully-fledged director. His acting career began with such Disney films as The Strongest Man in the World (1975), moving on through Heroes (1977), Boardwalk (1979), Rocky III (1982), Anna (1987), The Mighty Quinn (1989) and The Bounty Hunter (1990). But, while still pursuing a parallel career in stunts, he became a second unit director, the first of many such credits, on Fatal Attraction (1987), and directed his first solo film, Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco, in 1996. Most of his other movies were special effects chillers: Final Destination 2 (2002), Cellular (2004), Snakes on a Plane (2006), Asylum (2008), The Final Destination (2009) and Shark Night 3D (2011), his last. He was working on a new film, Kite, at the time he was found dead in his hotel room. The R stood for Richard.
