Benign, bespectacled, award-winning American director who began by working in acclaimed documentaries, but graduated to fictional feature films. The great-nephew of conductor Leopold Stokowski, Hickenlooper made his first feature documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, the story of Francis Coppola and Apocalypse Now, at 28. Later work included the short Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade (1994), Persons Unknown (1996), Dogtown (1997), The Big Brass Ring (1999), The Man from Elysian Fields (2001), Mayor of the Sunset Strip (2003, and a return to the documentary), Factory Girl (2006) and the Kevin Spacey vehicle Casino Jack (2001), his last. He died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
