Diminutive, tousle-haired American director who won an Oscar for Rocky (1976) and was responsible for some popular entertainments. A cinematographer by trade, he began directing his own films while still in his early thirties: Turn On to Love (1969), Joe (1970), Cry Uncle (1971), Save the Tiger (1973) and W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings (1975). Declining to direct Rocky II, he made Slow Dancing in the Big City (1978), The Formula (1980), Neighbors (1981), A Night in Heaven (1983), The Karate Kid (1984), The Karate Kid Part II (1986), Happy New Year (1988), For Keeps? (1989), Rocky V (1990), 8 Seconds (1994), A Fine and Private Place (1997) and Inferno/Desert Heat (1999), his last, although he was planning another, Nate & Al, at the time of this death from pancreatic cancer. Actress Tracy Brooks Swope was the second of his two wives. Both marriages ended in divorce.
