Languid, lanky, flop-haired comedy character actor, who later turned with great success to writing TV comedy series. Cast mainly as 'silly asses' in his movie days, the actor, born John Jeremy Lloyd, made his film debut in School for Scoundrels (1959), subsequently being seen in Man in the Moon (1960), Very Important Person (1961), Crooks Anonymous (1962), We Joined the Navy (1962), Death Drums Along the River (1963), A Hard Day's Night (1964), Help! (1965), Doctor in Clover (1966), The Wrong Box (1966), Smashing Time (1967), The Assassination Bureau (1968), Goodbye, Mr Chips (1969), Games That Lovers Play (1971), Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and The Bawdy Adventure of Tom Jones (1976). By this time he had become better known as the writer of such TV comedy hits as Are You Being Served? and 'Allo 'Allo. His only remaining film acting credit was in the 2013 drama-documentary Benjamin Britten: Peace and Conflict. Four times married - once to actress Joanna Lumley - he died from pneumonia.
