Continental film director with distinctive pudding-basin haircut to her coppery hair. A darling of the nouvelle vague, her earlier films are her best, although she also made many interesting documentaries. Debuting at 27 with the poignant La Pointe Courte, she also made Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962), Le Bonheur (1965), Les Creatures (1966), Nausicaa (1970), One Sings, the Other Doesn't (1977), Vagabonde (1985), ?em>Le Petit Amour (1988), Jacquot de Nantes (1991), One Hundred and One Nights (1995), Les Trois Boutons (2014) and Faces Places (2017), her last before death from breast cancer. Born Arlette Varda, she married fellow-director Jacques Demy, but he died at 59.
