Tall American director with happy face and stubbly beard who frequently found the magic formula for making films that met with both critical and popular approval. Also a talented writer, he shared an Oscar for co-writing L.A.Confidentlal in 1997. Initially working for producer Roger Corman, he wrote The Dunwich Horror in 1970, then made his directorial debut with Corman's Sweet Kill (1972). Subsequent credits as director include Evil Town (1977), The Little Dragons (1979), Losin' It (1983), The Bedroom Window (1987), Bad Influence (1990), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), The River Wild (1994), L.A.Confidential (1997), Wonder Boys (2000), 8 Mile (2002), In Her Shoes (2005), Lucky You (2007) and Chasing Mavericks (2012), his last. He died from Alzheimer's Disease and heart problems, survived by his partner, the Australian producer Rebecca Yeldham.
