British actor with a mass of tight. fair curls and impish, Puck-like features. Equally at home in comedy or drama, he tended to play smiling neurotics in his younger days, but, with the passing years, his villains and rogues became scruffier and less menacing. Could still be nasty to some effect, but chose to go for raffish comedy as Tinker Dill in the the long-running TV series Lovejoy. After a low-key film debut in A Night to Remember (1958), he was soon in demand for prominent roles: Go to Blazes (1961), The Boys (1962), The Leather Boys (1963), Rotten to the Core (1965), Crossplot (1969), The Walking Stick (1970), The Devils (1971), Diamonds on Wheels (1972), The Stud (1974), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), The Prince and the Pauper (1977), The Big Sleep (1978), George and Mildred (1980), Brimstone and Treacle (1982), Lamb (1985), The Rainbow (1989), Orlando (1992), Incognito (1997), The Tichborne Claimant (1998), This Filthy Earth (2001), Song for a Raggy Boy (2003), The Football Factory (2004), Irish Jam (2006), Dean Spanley (2008), The Shouting Men (2010), Cockneys vs Zombies (2012), Decline of an Empire (2014), Tin (2015), The Tell-Tale Heart (2017), A Midsummer Night's Dream (2018), When the Devil Rides Out (2019), his last, and many more. He died from cancer. Married/divorced American actress Marjorie Steele, who died earlier this year.
