Honor Blackman

Actress

Born - 22 August 1925, Plaistow, London, England
Died - 6 April 2020

Blonde, strong-chinned British actress with 'English rose' features whose wartime career as a Home Office despatch rider was a foretaste of the action heroines that eventually made her name. But the Rank Organisation tended to put her into milk-and-water roles and her career stagnated until, with judo-throwing Cathy Gale in TV's The Avengers from 1962 and Pussy Galore in the Bond movie Goldfinger (1964), she came into her own. Alas, the parts came too late to trigger her back to major star roles in films, although she continued acting into her eighties. She had broken into films soon after WW2: Fame is the Spur (1947), Quartet (1948), A Boy, a Girl and a Bike (1949), Diamond City (1949), So Long at the Fair (1950), Green Grow the Rushes (1951), Come Die My Love (1952), Diplomatic Passport (1954), The Glass Cage (1955), Breakaway (1956), Suspended Alibi (1957), The Square Peg (1958), Danger List (1959), A Matter of WHO (1961), Serena (1962), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Life at the Top (1965), The Secret of My Success (1965), Moment to Moment (1966), A Twist of Sand (1967), Shalako (1968), Twinky/Lola (1969), The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970), Something Big (1971), To the Devil a Daughter (1976), Age of Innocence (1977) and The Cat and the Canary (1978). In later years, she played a few acerbic cameos: Talos the Mummy (1997), To Walk With Lions (1999), Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), Hot Gold/Jack Brown and the Curse of the Crown (2003), Color Me Kubrick (2005), Reuniting the Rubins (2010) and Cockneys Vs Zombies (2012), her last. Actor Maurice Kaufmann was the second of her two husbands, both divorced. She died at 94 from natural causes.
