A former male model who turned to acting and found success on the Broadway stage - before hitting the Hollywood bigtime as tough, raunchy Afro-American private eye Shaft (1971), a role he played in several more movies. Many other films included Embassy (1972), Shaft's Big Score! (1972), Charley One-Eye (1973), Shaft in Africa (1973), Earthquake (1974), Man Friday (1975), Diamonds (1975), Portrait of a Hitman (1978), Escape to Athena (1978), Game for Vultures (1979), An Eye for an Eye (1981), Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), City Heat (1984), Jocks (1986), Maniac Cop (1988), Bad Jim (1990), Mind Twister (1993), Se7en (1995), Original Gangstas (1996), Shaft (2000), Capone's Boys (2002), Brick (2005), Speed Racer (2008), The Confidant (2010), This Bitter Earth (2012), Collar! (2015), Retreat! (2016), What Men Want (2019) and Moving On (2022), his last. Twice married and divorced, he had five children. He died from pancreatic cancer.
