Bespectacled Italian director with round, set, almost grim features who, with his brother Vittorio, made frequently controversial arthouse films over six decades. Their work included A Burning Man (1962), I Sovversivi (967), Under the Sign of Scorpio (1969), Allonsanfan (1974), Padre Padrone (1977), Night of the Shooting Stars (1982), Kaos (1984), Good Morning Babylon (1987), Night Sun (1990), Florile (1993), Elective Affinities (1996), You Laugh (1998), The Lark Farm (2007), Caesar Must Die (2012), Wondrous Boccaccio (2015), Rainbow, a Private Affair (2017) and Leonora Addio (2022), his last. He died 'after a long illness'. Vittorio died in 2018.
