Foxy-looking American actor with dark, receding, crinkly hair, gruff voice and a twinkle in the eye. Started his career as gangsters or bandits, but enjoyed his meatiest parts as a crusty, trusty character player, notably as the rundown private eye in Jagged Edge (1985), which won him an Oscar nomination. Born Salvatore Loggia, he made his film debut in Somebody Likes Me (1956). Many subsequent appearances included those in The Garment Jungle (1957), Cop Hater (1958), The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca (1959), Guns of Wyoming (1963), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Che! (1969), Don't Turn the Other Cheek (1974), Raid on Entebbe (1977), The Ninth Configuration (1979), An Officer and a Gentleman (1981), Scarface (1983), Psycho II (1983), Prizzi's Honor (1985), The Believers (1987), Relentless (1989), Too Hot to Handle (1991), Innocent Blood (1992), Bad Girls (1994), Independence Day (1996), Lost Highway (1996), Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997), Joan of Arc (1999), Return to Me (2000), The Deal (2005), Wild Seven (2006), The Least of These (2008), Harvest (2010), Real Gangsters (2013), Sicilian Vampire (2015) and Hospital Arrest (2016), his last. He died from Alzheimer's Disease.
