Gene Barry

Actor

Born - 14 June 1919, New York City, USA
Died - 9 December 2009

Debonair American actor with wavy black air and languid, self-confident air. Born Eugene Klass, he was at first a violin prodigy and then singer before appearing on Broadway as an actor at 23. Films beckoned rather belatedly, but he had leads in his first ones, The Atomic City and War of the Worlds, both in 1952. He got to sing in Those Redheads from Seattle (1953), but the film was an expensive flop. His greatest fame came on TV, especially with the wildly popular glossy crime series Burke's Law (1963-66). Film stardom continued to elude him, but there were other TV successes with Bat Masterson (1958-61), The Name of the Game (1968-71), The Adventurer (1972-74) and finally a reprise of Burke's Law in 1994-95. His last work was a guest appearance in the 2005 remake of War of the Worlds as Tom Cruise's father. He died from congestive heart failure.
