Bekim Fehmiu

Actor

Born - 1 June 1936, Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia)
Died - 15 June 2010

Tall, dark, gloweringly handsome Bosnian actor who enjoyed a flirtation with international stardom during the late 1960s and 1970s. An idol in his native country, he made his film debut in Sasa (1962), and was briefly in England for Morgan - A Suitable Case for Treatment in 1966. But it was the worldwide success of the Yugoslavian film I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967) that brought him to the attention of Hollywood, who gave him the lead in a star-studded flop called The Adventurers in 1969. After that he mixed European and English-speaking films: The Devil's Backbone (1971), The Last Snows of Spring (1973), Permission to Kill (1975), Salon Kitty (1976) and Black Sunday (1977), being seen less often in the succeeding decades. He made Gengis Khan in 1992, and Balkan Island (1997), his last. In June 2010, Fehmiu shot himself to death.
