Tall, leeringly long-jawed character actor, bald from an early age, and often cast as villains, especially those who 'turned yellow' at the end. Originally a stand-up comedian, he moved into films with Hickey & Boggs (1971), his crackling tones and distinctive looks coming quickly into demand for scores of further movies. Among many others, he was seen in The Magnificent Seven Ride (1972), Executive Action (1973), The Longest Yard/The Mean Machine (1974), the TV movie Last Hours Before Morning (1975, the leading role, as a private eye), Breakheart Pass (1975), Family Plot 1976), Magic (1978), Death Hunt (1980), Cujo (1983), Death Wish 3 (1985), Raw Deal (1986), Gleaming the Cube (1988), My Blue Heaven (1990), School Ties (1992), Trial by Jury (1994), Mulholland Falls (1995), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Allie & Me (1997), Thirteen Days (2000), Seabiscuit (2003), The Longest Yard (remake, 2005), The Number 23 (2007), The Artist (2011), Trouble with the Curve (2012) and The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014), his last. Four times married, he died from mesothelioma, a form of cancer.
