Fair-haired Olympic gold medallist (1952 - 400 metre relay), an avowed horse lover who became an amateur rodeo champion and then film stuntman, almost entirely in westerns. Films in which he also had small roles included The Law and Jake Wade (1958), Rio Bravo (1959), The Alamo (1960), Two Rode Together (1961), McLintock! (1963), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), El Dorado (1966), The Scalphunters (1968), The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), Rio Lobo (1970), Big Jake (1971), Ulzana's Raid (1972), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1973), a featured role in Seven Alone (1974) and Mackintosh and T.J. (1975), his last, although he continued as a stunt co-ordinator in many more films until retiring in 1997 to raise horses on his ranch. Three times married, he died from cancer.
