Bespectacled, bushy-haired Italian director of popular films. He was also director of the Venice Film Festival from 1979 to 1982. Nominated for an Oscar in 1951 for his screenplay for Bitter Rice (1949), he had soon launched a career in direction: Attention: Bandits! (1951), Lo Svitato (1956), Il Gobbo/The Hunchback of Rome (1960), La Vita Agra (1964), The Hills Run Red (1966), The Violent Four (1968), Crazy Joe (1974), Kleinhoff Hotel (1977), Fontamara (1980), The House of the Yellow Carpet (1983), The Wicked (1991), Celluloid (1996), Hotel Meina (2007) and a segment of Scossa (2011), his last, although there were nearly 50 more. He died after falling from a third floor balcony at his home in Rome.
