Died - 27 September 2013

Dark, suave, moustachioed magician and sleight-of-hand expert, on stage with his own act at 18. Born Madren Calvert, his fame brought him to Hollywood, where his skilled hands doubled for 'card-playing' actors in a number of films, including Honky Tonk (1941) and Mississippi Gambler (1942). Soon, his smooth style brought him in front of the camera in acting roles: Bombardier (1943), Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves (1943), The Mark of the Whistler (1944), Ten Cents a Dance (1945), Youth on Trial (1945), Return of the Durango Kid (1945) and Lawless Empire (1946); then three films as ace 'tec The Falcon: Devil's Cargo (1948) Appointment with Murder (1948) and Search for Danger (1949), before rounding off his film career with Gold Fever (1952), Dark Venture (1956, which he also directed) and Mat Magic (1960), his last. He continued performing on stage, however, for more than 50 years, appearing at the London Palladium at the age of 100 and teaching magic to others, assisted always by his wife Tammy, who survives him.
