Dapper, dark-haired American director who made dozens of short comedies about Joe McDoakes, 'the man behind the 8-ball' at Warner Brothers in the 1940s and 1950s and, later, scores of episodes of the TV series Green Acres. He even found time to make a few feature films, among them Circus Horse (1947), Smart Girls Don't Talk (1948), Flaxy Martin (1949), The House Across the Street (1949), This Side of the Law (1950), Return of the Frontiersman (1950), Prisoners of the Casbah (1953), The Outlanders (1956), Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend (1957), Girl on the Run (1958), This Rebel Breed (1960), You're Only Young Once (1962), I Sailed to Tahiti with an All-Girl Crew (1968) and Wicked, Wicked (1973), his last. The second of his five wives was actress Phyllis Coates, who starred in the McDoakes series. The 'L' stood for Leland.
