Glenda Jackson

Actress/politician

Born - 9 May 1936, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England
Died - 15 June 2023

Distinctive, dark-haired, snub-nosed English actress with precise, tart tones who looked as though she would stand no more nonsense than the original Mary Poppins. She remained a stage actress through her early career, then suddenly burst on to the film scene as tempestuous, destiny-changing females. Won two Oscars in four years for Women in Love and A Touch of Class and endeared herself to millions with her straight-faced sense of comedy on TV's Morecambe and Wise Show. A staunch socialist, she became a Labour MP in 1992, remaining in her seat until 2015. Films include The Extra Day (1956), This Sporting Life (1963), The Marat/Sade (1966), Tell Me Lies (1967), Negatives (1968), Women in Love (1969), The Music Lovers (1970), Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), A Touch of Class (1972), Bequest to the Nation (1973), The Maids (1974), The Romantic Englishwoman (1975), Nasty Habits (1976), House Calls (1978), Stevie (1978), Lost and Found (1979), Hopscotch (1980), The Return of the Soldier (1982), Turtle Diary (1985), Salome's Last Dance (1988), The Rainbow (1989), King of the Wind (1990), Mothering Sunday (2021) and The Great Escaper (2023), her last. Married/divorced actor Roy Hodges, she died 'after a brief illness'.
