Larry Hagman

Actor

Born - 21 September 1931, Fort Worth, Texas, USA
Died - 23 November 2012

Waspish, dark-haired actor, the son of singing star Mary Martin. Born Larry Hageman, he made a start in regional theatre before service in the US Air Force. Back in civilian life, he began acting on TV from the mid 1950s, but was into his thirties before a film debut in Ensign Pulver (1964). He quickly became a top supporting player, but it was TV that was to bring him national recognition, first in the comedy series I Dream of Jeanie, which ran for six years from 1965, then, most memorably as the hateworthy J R Ewing in the mega-hit Dallas from 1978, an association that only ended when his character was bumped off in 1991 after he had made more than 350 episodes, several of which he also directed. Other films along the way included The Cavern (1964), Fail Safe (1964), In Harm's Way (1965), The Group (1966), Beware! The Blob (1971, which he also directed), Inside Job (1973), Stardust (1974), The Big Bus (1976), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), Superman (1978), SOB (1981), Dead Perfect (1992), Nixon (1995), Primary Colors (1998), Freddy Got Fingered (2001) and The Flight of the Swan (2011), his last. His J R Ewing character was revived for a new series of Dallas in 2012, but the same year he was dead, following complications from throat cancer.
